How to protect your account?

In today’s world, cybersecurity is a must in order to protect yourself from unauthorized access to the account. At Jitt, our first priority is security for everyone.

We will discuss about different tips that you can use to protect your Jitt account to enhanced your security.

Strong password.

We won’t say this enough, but a strong and difficult password is a must when setting up an account online. We recommend the following best practices when setting up a new password for an account.

  • Avoid using common password and easy to guess (e.g. Abcd1234!, letmein, 12345, and etc…).
  • Add some complexity and make sure it is easy to remember.
  • Don’t use the same password. Choose a different password for each of your account.
  • Don’t use your personal details (birthday. pet’s name, city, and etc…).

I know it can seems overwhelming and hard to create strong password on demand, but there’s might be a solution to make it easier.

The following does apply only if you are using your own personal computer or a trusted computer such as work laptop.

If you are using either Google Chrome or Apple Safari or even most of th modern browser, they already have a built-in password manager for you. What does it mean?

Well, it mean you can let your creativity go hard when creating your password. Usually Google would ask you if you want to save the password for that website, including the username and it will save it securely.

For Apple’s user, it’s the same thing, but it goes above and beyond. Apple’s Safari does allow you to generate a strong password on your behalf and directly save it into your iCloud Keychain.

When clicking on the field to enter a password on a , it would prompt to if you rather prefer Safari to generate a random strong password and save it into iCloud Keychain. Personally, I used quite often and since I use Apple’s device on the go and at home I don’t have to worry about that. Phew! One last thing to remove from my ”Things that annoy me the most!

There’s also paid option for password manager, such as Dashlane. They do offer a free option as well, but for advanced protection you would need to shell out around $6-7 per month or go annual for less.

They also quite often run promo, at the time of writing this article (02 June 2022) they are running a promo for 50% on Dashlane Premium (code: GRADS2022). Not sure how long it would stay, but it’s worth checking out.

For most people, Google Password Manager (https://passwords.google.com/) and Apple’s Safari (https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/keychain-access/kyca1083/mac) would be more than enough.

They also check periodically if one of your password saved on their platform were compromised due to a breach.

Change your password regularly.

We recommend to change your password every 3 to 6 months to ensure better safety for your account. This does applies to actually any accounts that you can access online (e.g. online banking, email accounts).

2FA (Two-factors Authentication)

2FA (Two-factors authentication) is an additional step before getting access to your account that can dramatically increase your security.

This is a feature available for all Jitt’s user for free and can be activated quite easily.

In order to activate that feature, you need two things.

  • A mobile phone
  • One of the following application which are all free (ranked by the most easier to the less user-friendly): Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or Authy.

You would need to follow these instructions to activate the 2FA:

  • Log in to your account.
  • Click on your name on the header (top right)
  • Click on Account (identified with a wrench icon)
  • Scroll down until you see a section called Two-factor authentication.
  • By using the dropdown menu click on Yes.
  • Additional would appear below the dropdown menu field.
  • By using your phone, open the authenticator application you have installed and scan the QR code. If you can’t scan the QR code, you can manually input the series of numbers shown beside the QR code.
  • The authenticator after successfully setting up the code will show you a six digits (most of the time) code that you would need to enter to confirm that you have successfully setup the code on our website.
  • Scroll until Update button and you’re all done!

You can also do the same thing with other accounts that you may have. Most of your service providers should provide 2FA, it can be useful to protect all your account by using this method.

Although, this can be done the instructions would be different than ours.

Setup your anti-phishing code.

The following is only applicable to our platform. We have recently introduced the ability to setup an anti-phishing code.

You might asked what it is? Well it’s quite simple. The problem with phishing is to ensure that the sender did sent us a legitimate email and not someone else.

In order to resolve this and to help our users easily authenticate and recognize a legitimate email that we sent to them. We have introduced this feature.

The way it work it’s quite simple, you go to your account settings and locate the field Anti-phishing code. You can enter any value in this field and save.

How will it help to prevent phishing?

For each emails we will sent you, we will also include the code that you have setup. This way you can easily authenticate our emails from phishing.

We highly recommend to update regularly the anti-phishing code. Let’s say every 2-3 months.

Where can I locate the code in the email?

The code would be found at the bottom of the email.

Conclusion

We hope you liked our quick tips about enhancing security with your Jitt’s account or for your other accounts. Most of these steps should also apply to any other accounts that you may.

Some tips may not work with other services, but everything we specified in this article will work with your Jitt account.
